Everything you need to know about Smart Pager, from how it works to how we keep your data safe.
Smart Pager is an after-hours messaging service designed for professionals who are on call. When your clients call your dedicated number, they leave a message. That message is instantly transcribed by AI and delivered to you by push notification within seconds.
Think of it as a modern pager that actually gives you readable messages instead of just a phone number to call back. You get the full picture before you even pick up the phone.
We built Smart Pager for anyone who carries the weight of being on call. That includes doctors, veterinarians, dentists, allied health professionals, emergency responders, IT support teams, property managers, and anyone else who needs to be reachable after hours without giving out their personal number.
If you are currently relying on a paging service, an answering machine, or just hoping you do not miss a call... Smart Pager is for you.
Here is the full flow, from start to finish:
The whole thing takes seconds. No middlemen, no missed calls, no delays.
No separate download needed. Smart Pager is a web app that you add to your home screen in seconds. Tap Share, then "Add to Home Screen". It works just like a native app with instant push notifications.
Installing takes about 10 seconds from your browser and works on iPhone, Android, and desktop. It looks and feels like a native app, but without the hassle of app store downloads or updates.
When you sign up, we provision a real Australian mobile number just for you. This is the number your clients (or your office) will call to leave after-hours messages.
Your number is typically ready within 24 hours of signing up. You can see it on your Profile page once it is active. Share it with your office, your answering service, or directly with your clients.
When a caller leaves a message, the audio recording is processed by an AI speech-to-text model called Whisper (developed by OpenAI). This runs on our own servers in Australia, not through a third-party cloud API. Your recordings never leave the country.
The AI converts the spoken message into clean, readable text. It handles accents, medical terminology, phone numbers, and background noise surprisingly well. You always have access to the original audio recording if you want to listen to it yourself.
When a new message arrives, you'll receive an instant push notification on every device where you've installed Smart Pager. If you don't respond within your chosen interval, we'll send a reminder. As a last resort, we can send an SMS. Notifications also appear on Apple Watch and Wear OS automatically.
You're always in control. You can configure your notification preferences and escalation timing from your profile settings.
Yes. Push notifications from Smart Pager automatically mirror to Apple Watch and Wear OS devices paired with your phone. You'll feel the alert on your wrist, then tap to view the full message on your phone.
No separate watch app needed. It just works.
This is one of the features our users love most. When you need to return a call, just tap the callback link in the SMS or press "Call Back" in your inbox. Smart Pager calls your phone first, and when you pick up, it connects you to the client. The client sees your Smart Pager number on their caller ID. Never your personal mobile.
No more toggling caller ID settings on and off in your phone. No unreliable *31# prefixes that half the time do not even work. No worrying about whether your number leaked. Just tap a button and your privacy is protected, every single time.
Callback links from SMS expire after 24 hours for security, but you can always call back from the message in your inbox.
When the AI transcribes a message, it scans for certain keywords that may indicate urgency (for example, "chest pain" or "difficulty breathing"). If it finds them, the message gets a visual badge in your inbox so you can spot it at a glance.
Important: These badges are for your visual reference only. Smart Pager does not triage, prioritise, or delay any messages. Every message is delivered to you equally and instantly. We are a communication tool, not a medical device, and we have designed it that way deliberately.
They will receive a friendly automatic reply letting them know that the number is for voice calls only and asking them to call back and leave a message. You can customise this auto-reply text in your profile settings.
From your message inbox, tap "Request Photos" on any message. Your client receives an SMS with a secure link. They open it on their phone, choose up to five photos, add an optional note, confirm consent, and submit. The photos appear in your inbox within seconds.
The link expires after your chosen window (24 to 72 hours).
Australia. Full stop.
All your data, including recordings, transcriptions, client phone numbers, and account information, is stored on Australian servers in AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2). Nothing leaves the country. This is a deliberate architectural decision, not an afterthought.
For professionals handling sensitive information (especially health data), Australian data residency is not optional. We have built the entire system around this requirement from day one.
Security is baked into every layer of Smart Pager:
We follow the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), which require the highest level of protection for health information.
Every action in Smart Pager is logged: when a call was received, when you were notified, when you viewed a message, and when you changed its status. Each log entry is cryptographically linked to the previous one using a hash chain, which means the record is tamper-evident and can stand up to scrutiny.
You can filter and export the full audit log as a CSV from your dashboard. This is designed so that if anyone ever asks "what happened with this message?", you can show them a complete, verifiable timeline, even years later.
Recordings are retained for 7 years, in line with Australian medical records requirements. This applies to the audio files, transcriptions, and associated metadata.
If you need records deleted sooner, get in touch and we will work with you on a case-by-case basis, documented and auditable as required.
Yes. Smart Pager is designed with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles in mind. Health information receives the highest level of protection. All data stays in Australia, access is logged, and retention policies are built to meet medico-legal requirements.
We are also mindful of the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme. Our architecture is designed to detect, respond to, and report any potential incidents as required by the OAIC.
That said, we are a messaging and communication tool. We do not provide clinical advice, triage services, or medical decision support of any kind.
Yes. Every photo is encrypted with AES-256, stored exclusively in Australia (AWS Sydney), and retained for 7 years in line with Australian record-keeping requirements.
Location and camera metadata (EXIF data) is stripped before storage. Photos are never analysed or processed beyond the secure upload. Smart Pager is a secure transport layer only.
See our privacy policy for full details.

Absolutely. From your Profile page you can write a custom greeting that callers hear before they leave a message. You can include your name, your practice, specific instructions, or anything else you want callers to know.
You can also choose from several Australian, British, and American AI voices and preview each one before you save.

You are billed monthly via the payment method you provided at signup. Invoices are generated automatically and you can view or download them as PDFs from your Invoices page at any time.
Your Usage page shows a breakdown of calls received, SMS notifications sent, and callbacks made for each billing period, so you always know exactly what is happening on your account.
Yes. Every new signup includes a 14-day free trial. You will need to enter your card details when you sign up, but you will not be charged until the trial ends. If you cancel before the 14 days are up, you will not be charged at all. No lock-in, no hassle.
Your plan includes 20 photo requests per month at no extra charge. If you need more, each additional request is $0.55 (incl. GST).
Usage resets each billing month. You can see your current count on your settings page.
Smart Pager is built by a small, independent team based in Melbourne, Australia. We are not a Silicon Valley startup or a faceless corporation. We are a local Australian business that saw a real problem and built a real solution for it.
We understand the Australian healthcare landscape, Australian privacy law, and the unique needs of professionals who carry the responsibility of being on call. Every feature in Smart Pager was designed with that context in mind.
When you choose Smart Pager, you are supporting a small Australian business that genuinely cares about getting this right. We are not trying to be everything to everyone. We are trying to be the best at this one thing.
No, and that is intentional. Smart Pager is a communication tool. It delivers messages. It does not triage them, it does not prioritise them, and it does not make clinical recommendations.
Every message is delivered equally and instantly, regardless of content. The severity badges are visual aids only and have no effect on delivery order or routing. This design keeps Smart Pager clearly in the communication category and outside of TGA medical device regulations.
